The Cultural Association “Coro Melchiorre Murenu” of Macomer, was founded in 1973 with the aim of safeguarding and promoting the knowledge of local folk singing, and takes the name of the great poet in Sardinian language, who lived in Macomer in the first half of ‘800. His activity is also expressed in the organization of concerts, choral singing festivals and cultural exchanges with associations and choirs belonging to various Italian and foreign locations. Currently the Association consists of two choirs whose preparation and direction is curated by Maestro Francesco Vacca Baldus.

The Folk Choir, founder of the Association, has a staff of about 35 elements.

His repertoire is composed of traditional sacred and profane songs of Marghine, which still characterize the main moments of liturgical life and popular festivals, in Macomer and throughout the island, and numerous others whose music inspired by traditional modules, accompany the verses of the most famous poets in the Sardinian language. During the performances the singers wear the ancient Macomerese costume of the festival.

In 37 years of activity the Association has been able to transmit in a brilliant and educational way the passion of the choristers for singing and has distinguished itself at local, regional, national and international level with numerous reviews, cultural exchanges, concerts, prize competitions. It has also organized concerts for charity and, periodically, thanks to the help of local authorities, organizes musical and cultural days dedicated to different types of music. Always thanks to the intervention of the local authorities it was possible to organize musical preparation courses which gave the possibility to the same choristers to have a more complete preparation both vocal and technical. All this of course was possible thanks to the constant presence of the choristers and the great passion for singing that has always been the fundamental basis that has kept and keeps the choir constantly standing.

Currently for the city of Macomer the Association is a great example of musical culture for the dissemination of traditional and classical folk singing.
