The Choir “Maurizio Carta” was founded in Oristano in July 2002. Composed, currently, of about thirty elements is the first, and remains to this day, the only traditional Sardinian male polyphonic choir of the City of Oristano. The Choir is dedicated to Maurizio Carta, an appreciated oristano singer, who developed his career in the first half of the twentieth century.
Since its foundation, it has been directed by Maestro Salvatore Saba, graduated in flute, at the Conservatory of Cagliari.
The polyphonic choir “Maurizio Carta”, after having performed successfully in all the major centers of Sardinia, has landed in the Peninsula and then crossed the national borders, thus proposing itself also in the International field, where it has received enthusiastic acclaim. Among the international tours, they were particularly significant and appreciated, the one in Heilbronn, Germany and the participation of the choir, in September 2009, in the 15th edition of the “Festcoros”, the most important international folk festival that takes place every year in Brazil in Juiz de Fora, an important University City 180 km away.
In addition to the many best known pieces of the Sardinian tradition, a good number of unpublished pieces are part of the Choir’s repertoire, which refer to the canons of tradition. There are also some modern Sardinian songs, also particularly appreciated for the use of decidedly innovative sounds and harmonizations for Sardinian singing.
Thanks to an unpublished piece, signed by Maestro Saba, which reproduces the ancestral harmony of the ancient musical instrument of the “Launeddas”, from which the song itself has also taken its title, the Maurizio Carta Choir won, in December 2010, the first prize of the “innovative” section of the eleventh edition of the “Biennial Prize for traditional Sardinian choirs “Città di Ozieri”, attributed with the following motivation:
“The Jury appreciated the research work and the innovative choice of the Conductor consisting in the transformation of the harmonic and timbre structure of the launeddas, sublimated in the choral performance”.
It is particularly significant that the award of the prize to the Maurizio Carta Choir is the first time ever, in the history of this prestigious competition, that the prize itself is awarded to a choir not coming from central-northern Sardinia.
Ten years of activity of the Choir, during which it has promoted its territory and the most genuine traditions of our Sardinia, has meant that in 2011 it was assigned by the Confartigianato of Oristano the prestigious Silver Mask, 22nd edition.
L’Unione Sarda, in the publication of the Enciclopedia della Musica Sarda, has dedicated a large space in the 15th and 16th volumes to the Maurizio Carta Choir.
On December 7, 2013, at the Auditorium San Domenico in Oristano, the first audio CD of the Maurizio Carta Choir entitled “SARDIGNA” was presented to the citizens, which was a great success with the public.
For sartiglia 2014 a piece of the audio CD, entitled Sartiglia, was chosen by the “Sa Sartiglia” Foundation as the soundtrack of the prestigious propaganda spots Giostra Equestre, the main event of the Oristano Carnival.
Guest in many of the most important Sardinian choral festivals, the “Maurizio Carta” Choir gives life, itself, to a “Review of Traditional Sardinian Songs”, combined with an evening dedicated to choirs from all over the world. To these two events, now become expected and appreciated important components, which color the days of the Oristano carnival, space and fixed dates have been allocated: the “Antonio Garau” Civic Theater and the days of Saturday and Monday before the “Sartiglia”.
Many appreciations addressed to the Choir, not only for the goodness of the organization but, above all, for the refined and high quality of the participating choirs. This year the Choir celebrated the VII^ Rassegna dei Cori dal Mondo and the X^ Rassegna dei Cori Tradizionali Sardi, respectively on 14 and 16 February 2015.
In the summer of 2015 he made a trip to Rome where on August 2, the day of the Forgiveness of Assisi, after attending the Angelus of Pope Francis with the singing of Deus ti salvet Maria, he animated the Holy Mass of 17.00 with the songs of his religious repertoire. During the trip he performed in Concert in the city of Colleferro.
Still in August of the same year, the Choir performed successfully in Alghero, in Piazza Lo Quarter, guest of the Corale Polifonica Algherese, participating in the Estudi Polifonic Review, Cancons en Placa, now in its 19th edition.
In 2016, in February, the annual Rassegna Cantando a Carnevale was held, a tribute to sa Sartiglia which saw the Slovenian Nonet Brda perform with great success on the evening of Saturday 6 and on the evening of ‘8, in addition to the Maurizio Carta Choir, the Traditional Sardinian Polyphonic Choirs and Usini Choir. In 2017, in addition to the 12th Review of the Sardinian Traditional Choirs of the Oristano Carnival, he celebrated the 3rd day of “Voices out of the Choir” with the Choral P. L. From Palestrina di Cabras and the Choir of Siliqua.
In 2018, in addition to the various concerts on the island, he celebrated the 13th Review of the Sardinian Traditional Choirs of the Oristano Carnival. On December 22 of the same year he won the first prize of the 1st “Traditional” section in the fourteenth edition of the “Biennial Prize for traditional Sardinian choirs “Città di Ozieri”, ex equo with the Choir of Meana Sardo, attributed with the following motivation: “For the elaboration of the stylistic features in traditional Sardinian singing, with the grafting of variations in line with the spirit of the prize, performed with suggestive sound impact”.
In 2019, in addition to having celebrated the 14th Review of Sardinian Traditional Choirs of the Oristano Carnival, he participated from 16 to 23 June in the “Dolomiti CorinFestival 2019”, which was held in Borca di Cadore, Pieve di Cadore and Cortina d’Ampezzo, receiving great appreciation and success.
In 2020 it was able to celebrate, almost miraculously, the 15th Review of the Sardinian Traditional Choirs of the Oristano Carnival, and then interrupt, with regret, its activity due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. In December 2020 he proposed the song “Drommi Fizzu” at the online concert of the 10th Advent Festival “Cori sotto l’Albero” organized by the Cultural Association Arti Diffuse of Rome.
