The choir was founded in 1912 by the mayor István Bárczy from officials and teachers in the capital.
His first conductor and artistic director was Jenő Sztojanovits. After World War I in 1919, Kacsoh Pongrác dr. he relaunched the Budapest Choir.
Gáspár Krasznai is currently conducting the choir.
The choir sings both baroque and contemporary pieces and regularly participates in the performance of oratorio works in addition to the capella. The premiere of several Kodály choral works is connected to their name.
In 2002, the choir was honored to receive an award from the Metropolitan Municipality for Budapest for its leading role in the choir movement of the capital.
In 2012, the 100-year-old Budapest Choir received the Hungarian Heritage Award.
On the proposal of the Judging Committee of the Hungarian Heritage Award, the Budapest Choir became part of the Hungarian Heritage on 22.09.2012. On behalf of the choir, conductors Gábor Ugrin and Tibor Noseda received the diploma and the gold medal.
In 2017, we received a gold diploma at the “Chorus Inside Christmas” International Qualification Festival held in Budapest on December 16.
In 2018, we were invited to the “Chorus Inside Summer” International Qualification Festival in Italy. We sang in the Marucino Theater in Chieti. Here, too, we won a gold degree. We will receive a silver diploma at the Chisinau International Choir Festival in October. This was the first time that Hungarian choirs sang in Chisinau.
In 2019, at the “Chorus Inside Espana” International Qualification Festival in Lloret de Mar, the Metropolitan Choir received a silver diploma.
Over the years, we have been successful in many countries, such as Austria, Italy, France, Finland, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium and Spain.
