The Parish Polyphonic Choir “Sacro Cuore” was born in September 2013 from the intent of some parishioners to create a stable group that would animate the various celebrations in the parish and in particular the Sunday Mass at 11:00 am.
Taking advantage of the experience of the first historical choristers and gradually enriching itself with new “levers”, the choir increases its repertoire over the years by approaching polyphony.
The polyphonic liturgical singing, inspired mainly by the music of the Master composer Mons. Marco Frisina, over the years arouses great interest so much so that the choir, born with no more than 7/8 elements, today has about 30 choristers who give glory to the Lord through liturgical singing. The choir animates the various solemnities and celebrations in the parish throughout the liturgical year (from the beginning of the Pastoral Year to the parish feast of the Sacred Heart) and since 2015 it has also been called to animate various liturgies outside the parish walls. Among all, those at the Basilica of St. Anthony on the occasion of the “thirteenth” in honor of the Saint and those at the Basilica of the Hermitage for the celebrations of the “Seven Saturdays” in honor of Our Lady of Consolation.
In September 2016 he was the protagonist, together with the choir of the Parish of Campo Calabro, of the “Review of Marian Songs in honor of Our Lady of Consolation” organized in the Cathedral on the occasion of the Marian festivities. In January 2017 the choir organized and realized the “Epiphany Concert” in the parish where, together with the “Santa Cecilia” choir of Reggio Calabria, it proposed several polyphonic pieces belonging to the Christmas tradition. In July of the same year, on the anniversary of the Dedication of the Church (1 July), he organized and realized in the parish the “Sacred Heart of Jesus Choral Review” which saw the participation of almost 100 choristers belonging to four different polyphonic choirs: the choir “Sister Enrica Boroni” of Melito Porto Salvo, the choir “Cum Jubilo” of Campo Calabro and Acciarello, and the choir of the Association “Le Muse” of Reggio Calabria. Also in 2017, the choir resumed activities in mid-September and animated, together with the Youth Choir, the various celebrations of the Vocational Mission Week (1-8 October 2017).
On 24 and 25 November 2018, the Parish Choir participated in the III International Meeting of Choirs in the Vatican: an event that saw thousands of choristers and musicians from all over the world as protagonists. It was a unique opportunity for the choir to sing before Pope Francis in the Paul VI Hall.
In the afternoon of November 24, 2018 the Choir participated in the Great Concert of chorales directed by Mgr. Marco Frisina in the Paul VI Hall.
In addition, on the morning of November 25, 2018, the choirs participating in the Meeting of the Choirs, animated the Holy Mass presided over by Mgr. Rino Fisichella, in St. Peter’s Basilica.
On November 21, 2019, the Choir participated in the “Diocesan Meeting of Parish Choirs” on the Feast of Santa Cecilia, patron saint of musicians, in the Cathedral Basilica of S. Maria Assunta in Reggio Calabria, along with many other polyphonic and parish choirs of the Archdiocese of Reggio Calabria – Bova.
On July 4, 2020, the Choir animated a solemn Eucharistic Celebration to greet the Community of the Elizabethan Franciscan Sisters, the group of religious present in the parish since 1996.Even the Polyphonic Choir “Sacred Heart” has been embellished by the presence of two choral nuns over the last few years and in particular of Sister Franca Pellicanò and Sister Donatella Lessio.
On November 12, 2020, the Choir animated a solemn Eucharistic Concelebration presided over by the Archbishop of Reggio Calabria – Bova, S.And. Giuseppe Fiorini Morosini, who conferred the ministry of the Diaconate on Francesco Ielo, former secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council and collaborator of the Choir for Choral Reviews.
The choir is led and accompanied on the organ by Daniele Pedace.
