Established in January 1998 on the initiative of prof. Antonio Sposaro in homage to a priest of Limbadi “Don Giosuè Macrì (1883 – 1964), composer and pianist of great artistic depth, unknown in his homeland but well known in Buenos Aires where, having lived for many years, he left the mark of his musical skills by founding the “Liceo Musical Macrì”. – returned to Italy, in the 50s, he was the first organist in the Cathedral of Tropea.
The choir from the beginning was directed by maestro Francesco Arena.
Since autumn 2007 he has been directed by Maestro Vincenzo Laganà with whom he has embarked on a new musical path, presenting himself accompanied by a wind ensemble and a soprano.
He has participated in several important national and international events and exhibitions presenting a varied repertoire ranging from classical, sacred and profane music, to Calabrian and non-Calabrian folk songs, gospel and negro-spirituals.
Invited by the Office of Vatican Liturgical Celebrations, he participated, together with other Calabrian polyphonic choirs, in the solemn celebration of May 18, 2000 in St. Peter’s Square, presided over by His Holiness John Paul II, on the occasion of his 80th birthday and the Jubilee of Priests.
Particularly important, from an artistic point of view, was the performance of the choir in the concert held in the Cathedral of Tropea together with the internationally renowned Mexican organist Victor Urban.
He has accompanied famous artists, including 2 Calabrians: the tenor Francesco Anile and the soprano Caterina French.
In 2011, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage recognized it as a national organization for artistic and cultural merits.
He collaborated in the realization of the Sacred Oratory written and directed by Maestro Laganà: on June 29, 2011, in front of a cathedral and a crowded square, 100 choristers and 40 instrumentalists revived through singing and music, the spirituality of the Venerable Don Francesco Mottola.
He is the promoter of the national choral festival “Maria SS di Romania”, in honor of the patron saint of the city of Tropea. The event takes place in March, during the novena; this year it is in its fourth edition.
