The Monte Gonare choir is a male choral group founded in 2002, thanks to the passion of some young people of the village of Orani for singing and in particular for the traditional and popular songs of Sardinia. The priority purpose of our choral group is to promote social aggregation activities, stimulating the interest of the community towards the traditional Sardinian culture, with particular regard to the historical and cultural traditions of Oranesi.
The choir then began its career through the study and interpretation of the most famous traditional songs sung in Sardinia, such as “Deus ti salvet Maria”; or songs that have become popular such as: Non poter reposare, “Procurad’e moderatire”. In the meantime, a research project has been carried out, aimed at enhancing the huge heritage of poems composed by poets of Orani. Thanks to the precious and tireless work of the singing master Mauro Lisei, some of these poems, such as “A Gonare”, “Mutos de amore”, “Su ballu” have been adapted to singing and set to music, thus enriching the repertoire of unpublished songs of the Monte Gonare choir.
In 2004, with the patronage of the Province of Nuoro and the Municipality of Orani, the Monte Gonare Choir promoted the publication of the book TITLE BOOK, composed of 36 poems written by the young Oranese Andrea Mureddu, who died tragically a short time before.
In April 2005 the choir performed at the Narcissus Festival, which takes place in Hollerath, Germany. An event that was repeated in 2006, thus renewing the twinning between the communities, already in place for some years. In December 2006 the choir participates in the IX edition of the biennial City of Ozieri Award for traditional Sardinian choirs, which saw 16 of the best choirs from all over Sardinia perform. On that occasion the young Monte Gonare Choir, at the first participation in a competition of this magnitude, was awarded a prestigious second place with the song “Mutos de amore”, written by the Oranese poet Filomena Nieddu Mattana and magically harmonized by Maestro Mauro Lisei.
In 2007, precisely on the occasion of the feast of the Madonna di Gonare, which took place as every year on September 8th, the Monte Gonare Choir organized the first edition of the Cantande in Gonare festival, in which important choral formations of the island took part.
In 2010 the Monte Gonare Choir returns to talk about itself, winning the First Prize in the evolutionary section of the biennial City of Ozieri Prize, with the unpublished song “Su ballu”, taken from the poetry of the Oranese poet Giulio Chironi, on music and harmonization of Maestro Dr. Mauro Lisei; with the following motivation: “The unprecedented choice of an excellent text and the use of evolutionary styles but anchored to the roots of traditional Sardinian singing, in rhythm; in melody and language, they gave rise to an original song as a whole“.
Traditional Sardinian singing in Weddings
Particularly important in the activity of the Choir are the performances during the wedding ceremonies, in which a repertoire of sacred-traditional pieces is performed that accompany the different moments of the religious function. The choir also accompanies the bride and groom in the other stages of the wedding day, giving prominence and emotional charge to the most important moments of the day.
In public concerts, in addition to the pieces of the sacred-traditional repertoire, the Monte Gonare Choir performs several traditional and popular pieces, both those performed by the most important polyphonic choirs of Sardinia, as well as its original pieces specially harmonized on the texts of the Oranesi poets.
